Re-Stylising the Assets
Over Christmas, we had a chance to reflect on our alpha submission, and one thing that stuck in our minds was something that Steve Goss (of Supermassive Games) told us when he saw Phosphate in December: “I’m just not getting the 1950s feel”.
For a camp, sci-fi game set in the 1950s, this is pretty bad. Therefore, for the past month or so Rich and I have been working to re-stylise the assets we made last term. We looked at cartoons that we could work towards without changing the polycounts too much, such as The Jetsons and Wile E Coyote.
For me, this meant reworking the small assets and props, implementing the colour palettes of the time. I tried this out on the car first, exaggerating the rear end with fins and generally making it larger and more extravagant.
This worked well, and adding a subtle normal map to the paint material helped make it more interesting.
